But this is fucking awesome, I would gladly drive this thing everyday, even if it destroys my back. (more pics after the jump) EDIT: The retro bit I'm talking about isn't the Defender design itself, but the grille, color and Solihull badge in this special edition.

I need this bad

Brand new old defender. Really need this.

its not really "retro" though, is it?

I see tons of these in Paris (usually with Society of Lawyers badges on the windshield), and they are 100% as beautiful in person. Love these things.

The color scheme and grille design are a homage to the original Land Rover Series III or IIA, so I considered it to be styled in a retro way, but I might be wrong haha.

Is it really retro if it never changed?

These special edition ones? Also, I want to be part of that society.

See, this one is a special edition, the color and grille design are a homage to the Series III and IIA Land Rovers.

id call it a tribute, since the actual design is just old...not new with the intent of looking old.

I don't need it... I don't need it...
Who am I kidding? I need it now!

It is a tribute, but it is an old design with the intent of looking even older.

Ahh, looking at the tiny pictures on my phone, didn't realize it was a special edition. Lots of defenders around though.

Oh! That explains why this one looked so classy!

The colors and grille are a tribute to the III and IIA. Regular Defender are also a thing of beauty, seeing them in a large metropolis like Paris must be awesome, I get all jittery when I find one around here.

To be honest I prefer the previous Land Rover Defender Heritage Ltd Edition.
With the contrast grille.
Sure they are about 15 year old now but hey it's a Defender.

I briefly toyed with the idea of getting one of these in '97, when I got out of law school. But the ride was barbaric, the 4 speed difficult to shift even on warm days, and the build quality questionable. Wound up with an SHO.

I don't know, the color on this heritage looks too much "Mint-Choc-Chip" for me, but then again so could the new one as there could be all sorts of editing for the photo shoot. It could also use some steelies.

They're hilariously popular considering how far driving the streets of Paris is from their "intended" use. The utility companies and other businesses also use trucks like these, which is pretty cool.

The Bronze Green works better for me really as that is the colour I associate with early Landies even though the light green is true.

Yeah, it would not make a great DD, the guy who parks behind me owns a personal carrier one, I need to drive that one day. I nearly bought a 607 when I got out of law school, but maintenance would be a nightmare, so I got Renault, and maintenance was still a nightmare.

And now you have a Citroen and ....

Maintenance is still a nightmare, but I have Subaru and that never needed any maintenance.

You can still maintain your anti-retro bias, because this is still an old model that has basically had much of its later facelifts stripped away to make it look old again, rather than a new design that is trying to look old.
Its basically Land Rover's equivalent of Volkswagen's Ultima Edicion Sedan, which just put back all the chrome and badges the Beetle had lost since the '60s to make it look old again.

But this is a different body, it might look similar but the beetle was always the beetle. This is supposed to look like the Land Rovers III and IIA, not the original Defender.

Yeah, I know, but the Defender still wasn't a clean-sheet redesign either. More a very heavy modernization of the earlier models and they decided to give it a new name to emphasize how significant the improvements were.
